I don’t know why, but Australia seems to have this fascination with BIG things… like really weird and slightly crap big icons. There are dozens of these big things around the country (although, a large concentration of them do seem to be in Queensland and New South Wales… go figure); the big banana, the big pineapple, the big merino… the list goes on. We make them tourist destinations and they’re so Craptastic that people actually stop at them, or in my case, make quite large detours to seek them out. Continue reading
A lot of people have told me I’ll meet some pretty interesting characters during my 6 weeks in South Australia. It’s not that South Australians are any more wacky than the rest of the country, it’s just that so many of the places I’ll be visiting are small towns, often quite remote, and if any of the accounts I’ve heard are to be believed, it’s places like these where those great Aussie characters are found.
So yes, I fully expected to meet some funny country folk. What I didn’t expect was that I’d meet one less than an hour after arriving in the state! Roadies, let me tell you about Frank ‘The Chook Bloke’ Turton, the man I consider to be the Jewel of the Murray. Continue reading
There’s a reason my home town of Melbourne, Australia is considered one of the World’s Most Livable Cities – it’s a freaking cool place. Melbourne oozes with culture and activity, it’s a place where the mainstream is overshadowed by the edgier, artier, funkier side of life and for those of us lucky enough to walk its colourful streets, Melbourne is a place that never fails to entertain or amaze… particularly if you know where to look.
Not only does Melbourne boast some of the best cafes, restaurants, shops and art galleries in Australia (let’s even go as far as to say among the best in the world… I might be a tad biased though), it’s also home to a multitude of very cool laneways that are packed with some of the finest treats of the city. Beijing is undoubtedly one of the great cities of the world – it’s big, it’s old and it’s bursting with cool. There is so much to see and do in Beijing it doesn’t really matter how long you spend there, you’re likely to leave feeling like you only just scratched the surface (I mean, even old mate Peking Man thought Beijing was a pretty happening spot about half million years ago… Imagine what the city has come up with since then!)
This week’s Friday Fives are my pick of things to do in Beijing – not necessarily all the big name sights (although, you should probably check them out too), but the 5 things I enjoyed most during my time in the city. Continue reading
Every Saturday between November and April, revellers in Goa congregate to dance the night away at the idyllic grassy flats of Neptune point – Palolem’s stunning star-lit, beachside party venue. This weekly party might look like a regular beach party, but it certainly doesn’t sound like one. In fact, it don’t sound like much at all – it’s dead silent. Continue reading
